My Hair Is Not Inherently Good

It's been 10 days since I washed my hair

The other day I was out with a group of friends and we started talking about the Hair Care Girl Lifestyle.  And I heard comments like:

“I tried not washing my hair but it looked terrible.”

“You know, my hair just can’t do it, it’s too (curly, straight, greasy, thin, thick).”

“You’re lucky, you have good hair for this.”

“You have such great hair, I could never do it, it’s too hard.”

Ladies!  Ladies!!!!  This just is not true!  I do not have inherently “good hair”.  In fact, to prove it I’m going to show a picture of my hair with absolutely nothing done to it.  In the picture below I was camping and had washed my hair with cheap shampoo/conditioner.  I was camping so I also used no product and no hair dryer.  Nothing.  Just shampoo, conditioner, and the sun to dry it.  And this is what it looks like au ‘natural:

Day-13-au-natural

Not so good, huh?  You see my hair is FRIZZY.  My hair has COWLICKS.

The reason the Hair Care Girl Lifestyle works for me is because I had to learn about my hair.  I had to learn what to do when it has weird kinks or my cowlick makes me look bald.  I had to learn what to do when it looks greasy and when it looks dry.  I had to learn how to wear it up all different ways beyond just a pony tail.  Basically I learned how to get really creative with my hair.  And this leaves me with so many options everyday I never stress about it.

Not everyday is a fantastic hair day but everyday is a good hair day.  Why? Because now I have tons of ways to wear my hair and I’m not attached to it looking any particular way.  Which is the essence of living the Hair Care Girl lifestyle…easy!

Designed by a Scrunchi!

Day 4: Designed by a scrunchi!

For the past few weeks I’ve been recovering from surgery.  This was my first major surgery.  I had books galore, sent my kids away, and settled myself for a few days of R and R.  (That actually stands for Rest and Recovery but I never knew this until I needed it!  Who knew???)

But the books stood by ignored while I indulged my secret indulgence.  TLC’s “What Not to Wear”.  Seriously, all I did, day after day was lay on the couch and watch Stacey and Clinton wreak havoc in people’s closets while building their self-esteem and teaching them “It’s not you, it’s the clothes”.

But there was this one episode with this one girl who was so cute, so sweet, and she had the best hair!  Her hair was to die for causing this Hair Care Girl to sit up and take notice.  Maybe not sit up exactly but I did I lift my head off the pillow a little.

But then…

Stacey and Clinton…

They chastised her…

For wearing a….

SCRUNCHI!!!!!

Oh my soul just shriveled!  Granted this girl wore hers outside (gasp!) but still…  Don’t trash talk my scrunchis!

Because guess what?  I actually style my hair with scrunchis.  I do!  And I swear by them.  I wear them when I’m home for the day, outside in the sun, when I lay out, in the pool, and to bed.  Yes, I said to bed.

When I wear them to bed I gather all my hair on top of my head and put it in a loose bun with my trusty scrunchi.  And when I do this I get:

Day 4: Big soft waves ala Scrunchi!

Big soft waves!  With nary a hair appliance used.  This hair?  It’s been in the sun, sweated in, swam in (I didn’t get it wet), slept on, gone to the beach, worn up, worn down, been brushed (yesterday), and still it looks great!  All because of my friend the Scrunchi.

This is day 4 mind you so that means it’s been 4 days since I washed it.  And it’s been 90+ degrees here.   But the best part is I didn’t even fully  brush it today.  Sometimes that’s the trick too.  I just brushed the roots with a pick and that was that.  Time to go!

Total time from shower to shoes: 20 minutes (includes shower, make up, wardrobe, jewelry selection and hair)
